Making Sense of: Difference from Control (DFC)
December 13, 2016
Difference from Control (DFC) is a discrimination testing method where assessors compare test samples against an identified control, rating the degree of difference on a scale from “no difference at all” to “very different.” DFC is especially popular in quality control programs where manufacturers need to quickly and reliably verify that production batches meet established standards.
Compusense recommends a six-step framework to develop a successful DFC-based quality control program:
- Understand your product and determine your standards
- Recruit, screen, and train a preliminary panel
- Introduce difference testing
- Introduce the Difference from Control method
- Analyze the DFC data
This structured approach ensures that DFC programs deliver consistent, actionable results for ongoing quality assurance.
