Academic Consortium Publications for November 2024
In October, we celebrated research on blueberries [https://scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jsfa.13964], so it seems natural in November we will celebrate research on, yes, blueberries again. This time, we celebrate a publication by Luis Felipe V. Ferrão, Camila F. Azevedo, Charles A. Sims, and Patricio R. Munoz in New Phytologist. Their aim is to identify breeding targets delivering the blueberries consumers prefer. Consumer liking of many blueberries were measured using the hedonic global labeled magnitude scale. Large quantities of analytical measures of soluble solids, titratable acids, pH, size, firmness and other properties were then used to predict hedonic outcomes using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The rationale for using MARS to help produce better blueberries on Earth might seem otherworldly, but the idea is to incorporate a threshold before the consumer benefit begins to be delivered. See below to find out more about their approach, as well as other fine publications by members of the Compusense Academic Consortium.
