Academic Consortium Publications for June 2026
This month, we are celebrating a recent publication in the journal Appetite by Paige M. Cunningham and John E. Hayes titled “Water intake, switching between bites and sips, and drinking behavior are associated with food intake across meals varying in spiciness: A secondary analysis of two randomized crossover studies”. This publication, along with related research by the same authors, has received media attention because it upends conventional wisdom that drinking water during meals reduces food intake by expanding the stomach, leading to earlier satiation. The authors analyzed data from a previous study in which participants could drink water freely while eating spicy foods. Then show participants who drank more water and who switched between bites and sips more frequently also ate more. Grab a spicy snack and some water, then read more about this and other research from the Compusense Academic Consortium here.
